Fifteen years ago, Ms. Cathy Kornblith saw how retirement gave her a chance to give back to the community. After selling off her business and relaxing for a few weeks, she decided to contact friends working in the non-profit world for help which eventually led her to whereshe stands in Galileo today.

The Technology Era at Galileo

Since 1996, Galileo has been living up to its name as the “Academy of Science and Technology after the superintendent of the San Francisco school board wanted each school to have a theme that they could live up to in 1995. Since the change, our school has been upholding its name by offering multiple technological resources for the students and teachers that other schools in the district don’t offer.

Efficiency of Wind Turbines

Six students from Ms. Franzen’s AP Environmental Class are measuring the efficiency of wind turbines at San Francisco’s Crissy Field once a week to monitor the turbine’s energy production to see if they are safe and efficient to be installed at Galileo. Although the wind turbines will not be installed for another 5-10 years, they will not only help reduce Galileo’s fuel bill, but also help save energy.

March for Education

With the encouragement from Galileo’s Social Awareness Club Sponsor, Ms. Kristy Morrison, 40 Galileo students were able to advocate against the cuts along with over 7 thousand other people, demonstrating their anger towards the budget cuts on education in front of California’s capital building in Sacramento on March 5th, 2012. Even though the rally itself was considered as a failure because more people were expected to attend, many Galileo attendees felt that the rally was an uplifting experience.

Make Love Public

This year San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) sent out word to the media to let them know about Galileo’ love fest, which has become a bigger event each year. The article, which was featured in the first page of the bay area section of the S.F Chronicle, continues to give a positive image of Galileo to the public.
